Saadi Gadhafi Under House Arrest In Niger
Saadi Gadhafi, a son of the late Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, is under house arrest in Niger after warning of a new revolution, officials in Tripoli said.
Libyan officials renewed their demand that Saadi Gadhafi -- granted asylum after the fall of his father's four-decade rule and living in Niger since September -- be arrested after he told the satellite news network al-Arabiya that "a new popular uprising" was percolating in Libya, CNN reported.
"Saadi used the asylum he was granted in Niger on humanitarian basis to carry out acts of aggression against the Libyan people and their glorious revolution," National Transitional Council spokesman Mohammed Nasr al-Hraizi said in a statement issued by the Libyan government.
Moammar Gadhafi was shot to death in his hometown of Sirte following his capture by rebels in October.
CNN reported security has been increased in Tripoli in recent days because Gadhafi loyalists have been using text messaging and YouTube videos to talk about a new uprising soon.
Saadi Gadhafi said he has had contact with Libyans "on a daily basis" and said several groups were ready to revolt against the new government.
"I call everyone to be prepared for this uprising, and be ready for the zero hour," he said. "Because when it happens, it will a real uprising."
He urged armed factions in Libya "to meet and discuss and achieve real peace this time."
Also killed in October was Moammar Gadhafi's son Mutassim. Another son, Khamis, was reported killed in battle in August. Gadhafi's second-oldest son and adviser, Saif al-Islam Gadhafi, is awaiting trial in Libya. Moammar Gadhafi's wife, three other children and several grandchildren fled to neighboring Algeria. (c) UPI
