He was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

A crime scene was established and police from Northern Beaches Local Area Command commenced an investigation.

Later on Monday evening police attended a home on Pittwater Road where they arrested a 19-year-old man.

He was later released without charge.

Police have been told the 31-year-old man was waiting at the bus stop with a man and a woman prior to the assault.

Officers believe the pair left the bus stop prior to speaking with police.

Police are urging anyone with information to come forward.
